Dalip Singh Saund was a farmer, judge, and three-term U.S. Congressman from California. Following the naturalization rights granted by the 1946 Luce–Celler Act, he became the first Asian American elected to Congress and the first Sikh to hold federal office. During his time in Washington, he championed civil rights, immigration reform, and agricultural policy while representing California’s Imperial Valley. His election transformed a newly won right to citizenship into representation at the highest levels of American government, opening the door for generations of Asian American elected officials.
