More than a million people around the world have gained access to microscopy through an invention that costs less than a dollar. In 2014, Stanford bioengineer Manu Prakash introduced the Foldscope, an origami-inspired paper microscope capable of laboratory-grade magnification. By dramatically lowering the cost of scientific instruments, the Foldscope expanded access to science education, disease detection, and field research worldwide.
