Sal Khan is an American educator whose mother, Masuda Khan, hails from Murshidabad, West Bengal, India. Raised in Louisiana, Khan left a career in engineering and finance to found Khan Academy, a nonprofit that provides free, mastery-based educational resources to learners worldwide. Its instructional videos have been viewed billions of times across digital platforms. Beyond online learning, he founded Khan Lab School to explore personalized, mastery-based education in the classroom. In 2012, he was named to the Time 100, and in 2025, TED announced him as its new Vision Steward to help guide the organization’s long-term direction in education, lifelong learning, and technology, including the responsible use of AI.
