Independent investigations by Asra Nomani and Kiran Chawla demonstrated the enduring importance of accountability journalism. Nomani’s Pearl Project revisited the murder of Daniel Pearl through collaborative investigative reporting, while Chawla exposed civil rights abuses within the Baton Rouge Police Department, prompting federal action. Working in very different fields, both journalists challenged powerful institutions through persistent reporting. Their investigations reinforced journalism’s democratic role and expanded the visibility of Indian American women in investigative reporting.
