Balan R. Ayyar’s promotion to Brigadier General in the U.S. Air Force in 2010 marked a military milestone. As the first Indian American to attain general officer rank in the U.S. Armed Forces, he broke one of the highest leadership barriers in military service. Over a career spanning four combatant commands, Ayyar held critical operational and strategic assignments, demonstrating that Americans of Indian origin could rise to the senior-most ranks of the nation’s military. His promotion reflected the growing diversity of leadership across the U.S. Armed Forces.
