While touring the American South to build support for Indian independence, social reformer Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay boarded a segregated, “whites-only” carriage. When the conductor ordered her to move, she flatly refused. Confused by her appearance, he demanded to know which land she hailed from. Rejecting foreign privilege, she famously replied: “It makes no difference. I am a colored woman obviously… I have no intention of moving.”
