At the 2004 Athens Olympics, Mohini Bhardwaj captained the U.S. women’s gymnastics team to a silver medal, becoming the first Indian American to win an Olympic medal in gymnastics. A late addition to the team after years on the fringes of elite competition, she returned to the sport following a brief retirement to make the Olympic roster at age 25, older than most of her teammates. She remains the only Indian American gymnast to have a skill officially recognized in the sport’s Code of Points.
