Data journalism took a significant step forward when Tasneem Raja helped create the first comprehensive database of mass shootings while at Mother Jones. The project established a reporting resource that journalists, researchers, and policymakers would rely upon for years. Raja later co-founded The Tyler Loop, demonstrating how nonprofit local journalism could strengthen civic engagement. Her work expanded the role of data and community reporting in American journalism while creating new tools for covering some of the country’s most urgent public issues.
