Born in New Delhi and raised in upstate New York after her family emigrated in 1966, Urvashi Vaid became one of America’s most influential LGBTQ+ civil rights leaders. As Executive Director of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force from 1989 to 1992, she helped advocate for the 1990 Hate Crimes Statistics Act, pushed for federal AIDS accountability, and helped organize the 1993 March on Washington.. Author of the landmark Virtual Equality (1995), she later co-founded LPAC and the Donors of Color Network until her death in 2022.
