Bibhu Mohapatra is a New York-based luxury fashion designer whose work has placed Indian American craftsmanship at the center of American style. Born in Rourkela, Odisha, he moved to the United States in 1996, earning a master’s degree from Utah State University before enrolling at the Fashion Institute of Technology, where he received the Critics’ Award for Best Evening Wear Designer. After nine years as design director at J. Mendel, he launched his eponymous label in 2008, dressing clients including First Lady Michelle Obama. A member of the Council of Fashion Designers of America, he is also co-founder of The India Society, supporting emerging fashion and fine arts students in the United States.
