Dr. Vishakha N. Desai combined scholarship, museum leadership, and cultural advocacy to expand the visibility of Asian and South Asian art in the United States. As director of the Asia Society Museum, she helped broaden the institution’s engagement with contemporary artists and positioned South Asian voices within mainstream cultural conversations. Through exhibitions, public programs, and institutional leadership, she strengthened opportunities for diasporic artists to reach wider audiences. Her work helped shape how major American cultural institutions presented Asian art and contributed to a more inclusive understanding of global artistic traditions.
