E. C. George Sudarshan was a theoretical physicist whose work spanned particle physics and quantum optics during a career at American institutions including the University of Rochester, Syracuse University, and the University of Texas at Austin. He co-formulated the V-A theory of weak interactions, a precursor to the electroweak theory that unified two of nature’s fundamental forces. He also developed the Glauber-Sudarshan representation, providing the mathematical language used to describe quantum states of light. His theoretical insights continue to inform research in quantum information science.
