Jaishri Abichandani combined artistic practice with institution-building to expand opportunities for South Asian women artists in the United States. In 1997, she founded the South Asian Women’s Creative Collective, creating one of the first dedicated platforms for feminist and diasporic artists. Through exhibitions, mentorship, and community-building, she helped cultivate a generation of creators whose work might otherwise have remained outside mainstream art institutions. Her efforts established critical cultural infrastructure and played a significant role in expanding the visibility of immigrant and South Asian perspectives within contemporary American art.
